What Happens During a Root Canal?

Learning you need a root canal may not cause you to jump up and down with joy, but if you want to be free of the pain, you’ll agree to the procedure.

The process will begin with receiving local anesthesia. This helps to numb your tooth and the area around it. If sedation dentistry is necessary, we can also provide it. We’ll then isolate the tooth with a dental dam so that it remains dry throughout the procedure.

When ready, we will make a small opening in the crown of the tooth and begin to clear away the damaged portions of the pulp and clean out the nearby canals. Using a substance known as gutta-percha, we will fill the tooth so that it maintains its structure before creating a tight seal.

After taking impressions of your tooth, the images will be sent to a laboratory, where technicians will build your new dental crown that will be put into place just weeks after your root canal. This will help to protect the tooth and guarantee it remains strong.
